State by State Summary of Nurses Allowed to Perform Conservative Sharp Debridement

ALABAMA
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill. LPN’s may not perform this procedure.

ALASKA
The Nursing board determined that it is acceptable practice for a nurse with wound care certification and additional training in sharp debridement can perform sharp debridement. Must have a physician's order and a clear policy and procedure at place of employment. RN that do not meet above criteria and LPN’s may not perform this procedure.

ARIZONA
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill. LPN’s may perform this procedure under the supervision of an RN or NP.

ARKANSAS
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill. LPN’s may not perform this procedure.

CALIFORNIA
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill. LVN’s may not perform this procedure.

COLORADO
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill. LPN’ may not perform this procedure.

CONNECTICUT
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill. LPN’s may not perform this procedure.

DELAWARE
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill. LPN’s may not perform this procedure.

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
RN and LPN’s may not perform this procedure. Must be an APRN.

FLORIDA
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill. LPN’s may not perform this procedure.

GEORGIA
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill.

HAWAII
Per state board, there is no definitive statement allowing or prohibiting RN’s and LVN’s from performing this procedure. There is no established decision making tree to follow.

IDAHO
Per state board, RN must use the decision making tree. LPN’s may perform if delegated by an RN and RN feels they are competent. The Board has not made a definitive decision on this matter.

ILLINOIS
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill. LPN’s may not perform this procedure.

INDIANA
Practice act does not address this procedure and the Board has not ruled on this procedure. RN/LPN must check with facility/institution’s policy and procedure and/or attorney regarding this matter.

IOWA
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill. LPN’s may not perform this procedure.

KANSAS
RN’s and LPN’s may not perform this procedure.

KENTUCKY
RN’s and LPN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s and LPN’s capacity to perform this skill.

LOUISIANNA
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. They must also have validation of technical skills on an annual basis. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill. LPN’s may not perform this procedure.

MAINE
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill. LPN’s may not perform this procedure.

MARYLAND
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill. LPN’s may not perform this procedure.

MASSACHUSSETS
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill.

MICHIGAN
RN’s and LPN’s can perform SD as long as they have had education and training and work under the supervision of a physician. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s and LPN’s capacity to perform this skill.

MINNESOTA
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill. LPN may perform this procedure if competent (additional education and clinical practice) and RN delegates task to LPN. Facility policy and procedures should reflect LPN’s capacity to perform this skill.

MISSISSIPPI
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill. LPN’s may not perform this procedure.

MISSOURI
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill. Board has not made a practice decision for LPN’s. Use the decision making tree.

MONTANA
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill. LPN’s may not perform this procedure.

NEBRASKA
RN’s and LPN’s can perform this procedure as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s and LPN’s capacity to perform this skill. LPN’s must work under the direct supervision of the RN.

NEVADA
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill. LPN’s may not perform this procedure.

NEW HAMPSHIRE
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill. LPN’s may not perform this procedure.

NEW JERSEY
The state board has made no specific ruling regarding this procedure. RN’s and LPN’s must use the decision making model algorithm.

NEW MEXICO
RN’s and LPN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s and LPN’s capacity to perform this skill.

NEW YORK
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill. LPN’s may not perform this procedure.

NORTH CAROLINA
RN’s and LPN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s and LPN’s capacity to perform this skill.

NORTH DAKOTA
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill. LPN’s may not perform this procedure.

OHIO
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill. LPN’s can also perform this procedure if they meet the same criteria as RN’s.

OKLAHOMA
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill. LPN’s may perform this procedure under the direct supervision of a RN or physician as well as meeting the RN criteria.

OREGON
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill. LPN’s may not perform this procedure.

PENNSYLVANIA
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill. LPN practice act has no definitive statement and no ruling has been made by the Board. If LPN chooses to engage in this skill, should meet the criteria of RN’s at least.

RHODE ISLAND
RN’s and LPN’s may not perform this procedure.

SOUTH CAROLINA
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill. LPN’s may not perform this procedure.

SOUTH DAKOTA
RN’s and LPN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clincal practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s and LPN’s capacity to perform this skill.

TENNESSEE
RN’s and LPN’s may not perform this procedure.

TEXAS
RN’s and LPN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s and LPN’s capacity to perform this skill.

UTAH
RN’s and LPN’s may only perform this procedure under the direct and visual supervision of a physician who is delegating the task.

VERMONT
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill. LPN’s may not perform this procedure.

VIRGINIA
RN’s and LPN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s and LPN’s capacity to perform this skill.

WASHINGTON
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill. LPN practice act does not address this skill. If LPN chooses to perform this procedure they should meet same criteria as a RN, work under supervision of RN or MD.

WEST VIRGINIA
The board has not made a definitive statement regarding RN’s or LPN’s performing this procedure. They recommend using the Decision Making Model.

WISCONSIN
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice. The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill. LPN’s may not perform this procedure.

WYOMING
RN’s can perform SD as long as they have taken a course and had supervised clinical practice.  The facility policy and procedures must reflect the RN’s capacity to perform this skill.  LPN’s may not perform this procedure.
